The 4th Wuzhen Theater Festival
THE festival, running from tomorrow till October 22 this year, has taken as its theme “Gaze Beyond.” It will present 22 plays from 13 countries.
Award-winning German director Frank Castorf, who has adapted and re-interpreted stage versions of a series of Dostoyevsky novels since 1999, will bring the new production “Der Spieler” (“The Gambler”) to the Wuzhen stage.
In commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the deaths of both Shakespeare and Cervantes, a series of tribute performances will be staged. They include the Spanish play “Quijote,” the Danish production of “The Tiger Lillies Perform Hamlet,” a Romanian work “The Tempest” and Chinese offerings of “King Lear” and “Hamlet Machine.”
The Young Theater Artists’ Competition will be expanded from 15 to 18 plays. They will be performed simultaneously on the East Warehouse and West Warehouse theater stages. First prize is 200,000 yuan (US$30,500).
All performances staged at the festival will have Chinese and English subtitles.
Aside from an impressive array of drama, the festival will also feature street art and music, traditional Chinese opera and juggling.
The Wuzhen festival has masterfully transformed old, disused sites such as warehouses and factories into theater spaces. In addition, a new grand theater has been built in the town.
