Chilling out in Wuyi’s hot spring resorts

SOMETIMES it doesn’t get any better than a good long soak in hot water. So it’s a good thing Zhejiang Province is close by with all of its hot springs.

Jinhua’s City’s Wuyi County is known for its hot springs. It produces 2,415 tons of hot water daily at temperatures ranging from 36 to 45 degrees Celsius.

From today through October 26, the county is hosting its 8th annual Wuyi Hot Spring Festival to coincide with the West Lake International Expo.

The hot spring water in Wuyi features a neutral PH value of 7-8 and it contains more than 20 mineral fluorites. The water has a slight greenish-blue hue due to the minerals.

There are several hot springs in the county, including Wuyi Clear Water Bay Hot Spring Resort and Wuyi Tang Style Hot Spring Resort.

Wuyi Clear Water Bay Hot Spring Resort is near Guodong Village and covers an area of 100,000 square meters. It is surrounded by lush hills. The resort’s hot spring ponds are divided into Japanese, Mediterranean and Balinese styles. Each pond features exotic decor and characteristics. Several ponds have a sand beach and romantic cabins, offering guests different options to suit their needs.

The resort also has an area for barbecue, basketball courts, a children’s playground and the opportunity to go fishing.

It also can accommodate meetings of up to 200 people in its conference center.

Wuyi Tang Style Hot Spring Resort is in Hushan Forest Park. What distinguishes it from rival resorts is the traditional Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907) decor and management concept. It makes guests feel as if they have traveled back in time to when, according to records, Emperor Tang Xuanzong and his beautiful concubine Yang Yuhuan often soaked in hot springs.

The resort also offers some hot spring ponds with traditional Chinese medicine herbs and flower petals that are believed to help boost energy.

Accommodation and food are available in both resorts but remember to bring your own swimsuit. Both resorts also have public changing rooms.

Wuyi also has a hot spring scenic area covering an area of 78 square kilometers. In recent years, it has attracted more tourists from nearby cities in the Yangtze River Delta region. Last year, nearly 5 million travelers flocked to Wuyi’s hot springs. Between this January and August, around 3.5 million tourists have visited the county.

The hot spring festival is sponsored by both the Zhejiang Tourism Bureau and Wuyi authorities.

During the festival, a series of conferences, summits and exhibitions related to the industry will be held in the county.

After having a good, hot soak, travelers may feel in the mood to explore Wuyi’s other charms including Dahongyan Mountain and Guodong Ancient Village. Dahongyan Mountain typifies the classic Danxia landforms known for steep cliffs similar to karst topography.

Guodong is in Wuyang Town and most residents are descendants of Song Dynasty (960-1279) premier He Zhizhong. The village was rigidly built according to feng shui principles and is surrounded by thriving vegetation. There are numerous lofty trees dating to the Song and Yuan (1271-1368) dynasties.

The clean and picturesque surroundings seem to agree with villagers, who have a life expectancy of 85 years.

The village’s ancestral hall has numerous historic relics that belonged to the He family.
