1 detained over mutton scandal

THE operator of a local frozen meat company has been detained by police for selling mutton that was mixed with other kinds of meat, the city's market watchdog said yesterday.

The operator, surnamed Li, said the Mulian International Frozen Meat sold mutton mixed with other meat as "pure mutton" to an outlet of P-Shang Dolar Hot Pot in Zhoupu in the city's Pudong New Area.

Some 44.5 kilograms of questionable mutton stored at the company's warehouse at the Xinpin Wholesale Market on Caobao Road had been seized, the Shanghai Industrial and Commercial Administrative Bureau said.

A raid at the market earlier this month led to the discovery of "New Zealand mutton" stored in the warehouse. The "mutton" had no production date or list of ingredients mentioned on the package.

The outlet of P-Shang Dolar Hot Pot in Zhoupu has also been shut down. Meanwhile, two other restaurants - Jialinge Restaurant in Hongkou District and Yudongshu Hot Pot in Jinshan District - were also shut down for selling mutton mixed with other meat.
