10 people honored as Shanghai ‘Peace Heroes’

TEN people were awarded “Top 10 Peace Heroes” last night for their contributions to the security of the city.

The winners included 62-year-old Fang Jiang, a traffic management assistant in Huangpu District. Fang had stopped a man who was waving a knife at pedestrians at the busy People Square on April 17, 2015.

When tackling the man, Fang was seriously injured in the head, face and hand. But he successfully held back the attacker until police arrived.

Fang needed more than 50 stitches on his face and hand while his left hand still has some sequelae.

He also won the national model Good Samaritan last year.

Shanghai Party chief Han Zheng and Mayor Ying Yong attended the awarding ceremony and met the heroes.

“You are models for all citizens and we all should learn from you,” Han told them.

He also pointed out that a safe, stable and harmonious social environment was especially important as Shanghai was building itself into a global center for economy, finance, trade and shipping, as well as a socialist modern international metropolis.

Another winner was Wang Haibin, 27. Wang ran up and down a six-story residential building to alert his sleeping neighbors after a fire broke out on the ground floor on the midnight of June 16, 2015.

Wang suffered 88 percent burns and he is still undergoing rehabilitation treatment.

The other winners included Qiao Beihua, a judge who dealt with labor dispute trials for more than 20 years; Zhu Xiaoyun, a lobby manager of the Baogang branch of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China who alerted clients of a telecom fraud schemes and prevented losses of over 1.64 million yuan.
