12 detained following raid on illegal cabs

TWELVE people suspected of providing unlicensed taxi services are being questioned by police following a crackdown yesterday outside a Metro station in Baoshan District.

A total of 12 vehicles were impounded in the raid, which took place near Meilan Lake Station, the northern terminal of subway line 7, police said in a press release.

The area around the station has a reputation for attracting unlicensed taxis and for sometimes being the scene of violent clashes between drivers eager to secure lucrative fares.

Prior to yesterday’s raids, police had identified 20 vehicles they suspected of being involved in the illegal activity.

The press release did not say whether any of the people taken in for questioning would be charged, though one man was detained after locking himself inside his car and refusing to cooperate with the investigation.

Another driver admitted to operating illegally after initially pretending that the person inside his vehicle was a neighbor, police said.

The raid also yielded several restricted category knives, which were found inside the impounded cars, the press release said.

If found guilty of providing an illegal taxi service, the 12 people could face fines of 10,000 yuan (US$1,600), have their vehicles confiscated and their driving licenses suspended for three months.
