12 electric buses get renovation, more seats
SHANGHAI has renovated its first 12 super-capacitor electric buses to carry more passengers using new technological advances in clean energy, the local bus operator said yesterday.
The renovated buses have lighter capacitors, which are large batteries, and can take 15 more riders, officials said. The capacitors' increased storage enables them to operate more continuously.
The buses, first introduced in 2006, have long had problems with relatively short electrical endurance and high maintenance costs.
The new capacitors weigh 0.6 ton, down from 1.6 tons, with 80 percent more capacity, said bus operator Shanghai Bashi Co.
The upgraded buses are running on route No. 26, and the city now has about 60 such buses in service.
The cost of the renovation was not disclosed.
