12 out of 50,000 candidates enter final of traditional language culture contest

The final of the citywide contest of traditional Chinese language culture will be held tomorrow at the Jiading Library. A total of 12 contestants selected from more than 50,000 candidates will compete in traditional Chinese poems, verses, proverbs and couplets.

Chinese character, one of the world's oldest writings conveys China's distinctive culture and wisdom of thousands of years. Organizers said that it is a good chance for today's young people to learn about the traditions and brilliant culture and history of the country.

The contest has attracted people from all walks of life. Contestants aged from 20 to 50 years old take the largest proportion.

The 12 finalists have experienced several rounds of competition. Among them are teacher, freelance worker, retired policeman, primary school student and community worker.

Zhao Xin, a 38-year-old freelance worker and one of the finalists is an enthusiast for Chinese riddles. In his childhood, he loves reading ancient Chinese novels.

"I am very proud of our mother tongue which is beautiful and elegant," Zhao said. "The competition with diverse styles and fun is very likely to stimulate young people's learning interests in both language and culture."

The contest is a program of the ongoing Shanghai Citizens Art Festival. Officials said that it is expected to be developed into an annual event to raise people's awareness of the charm of traditional Chinese culture.
