13 school attack bids thwarted

THIRTEEN attempts to attack local schools have been successfully thwarted by local authorities since March, the education authorities said yesterday.

This means local schools are also faced with potential risks, officials from the Shanghai Education Commission said.

The city have beefed up school security since March after a spate of attacks at out-of-town schools.

"Similar cases seldom happened on local campuses before," said Yang Yongming, the commission's youth protection division director.

"Suspects held all kinds of weapons including knives," he said.

At least one parent rushed to a school and threatened to kill students in order to force the school principal to agree to some requests. The attack was successfully stopped by guards outside the school gate.

The education authorities declined to reveal further details of the 13 cases.
