15 rescued as fuel ship catches fire
FIFTEEN crew members on a fuel ship whose cabin caught fire late Thursday were saved near the mouth of the Yangtze River, regional rescue authorities said yesterday.
The rescue efforts continued until late yesterday to put out the fire and escort the ship, said officials with the Donghai Rescue Bureau. The fire on the 90-meter ship, which carried 2,874 tons of gasoline, broke out about 11pm Thursday. The crew reported that the ship was in danger of an explosion.
The crew members abandoned the ship and retreated to a small boat. A rescue arrived early yesterday amid strong gale winds and rain, officials said. The rescue team took the 15 crew members to the rescue ship. No crew members were hurt, authorities said.
