1.8 million fake contact lenses found

THREE men have been arrested for producing fake colored contact lenses in Shanghai's suburban Songjiang District, police said yesterday.

The ring started the illegal business in 2008 and had produced millions of fake lenses before being busted at the end of July.

More than 1.8 million fake contact lenses were found in the suspects' hideouts and the value of the case was estimated more than 61 million yuan (US$9.66 million), according to police.

Police said they received a tip in June about the suspects' business at a company on Liuye Road, Chedun Town, which was later found to have no permits.

Police then found the suspects' workshop and warehouse in Chedun and even a sales office in Zhabei District.

On July 25, two of the suspects were caught in a police raid.

A third man was caught trying to escape on August 10.

Samples of the confiscated lenses were sent for testing and none passed the quality test.
