2 foreign drug smugglers get suspended death penalty
TWO foreigners were sentenced to death penalty with a two-year reprieve for smuggling 4,800 grams of cocaine from South America to Shanghai, the Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People's Court ruled today.
The two convicts were charged in separate cases. A 38-year-old woman from Paraguay, identified as Estigarribia, carried 3,300 grams of cocaine from Brazil to Shanghai on January 9. And a 54-year-old man from Columbia, identified as Correa, carried nearly 1,500 grams of cocaine to Shanghai on February 9.
Since they made good confessions, the court decided to give them suspended death sentences.
According to China's Criminal Law, a person found guilty of transporting cocaine in excess of 50 grams can be sentenced to death.
