2 held over beating of theft warning man

TWO of three suspects wanted for questioning after a man was beaten up for preventing a street theft have been detained, police said yesterday.

Yangpu District police said they are still seeking a third suspect.

Sui Jincheng, who suffered a fractured skull in the attack, was in a stable condition yesterday in Changhai Hospital, following surgery.

He was visited at his hospital bed by officials from Shanghai Public Security Bureau who presented him with a cash award for his heroism.

"I don't regret it," said 24-year-old Sui yesterday. "But if I saw pickpockets at work again, perhaps I'd warn their target in a different way."

Around 8pm on Tuesday, Sui saw three men trying to pick the pocket of a middle-aged woman on Guoshun Road in Yangpu District.

Sui shouted a warning to the woman and thwarted the theft, police said.

But the three suspects rushed over and attacked Sui, before fleeing.

"At first I didn't feel much pain, but my head kept bleeding," Sui recalled.

He went to hospital and it was found he had multiple fractures to his skull.

Police have put Sui forward for a heroism award.

The suspects were identified from surveillance camera footage.
