2 male pandas to replace female pandas in Shanghai zoo
Two giant pandas named Ya'er and Xing'er will make Shanghai Zoo their new home from tomorrow after traveling all the way from Chengdu giant panda breeding center in Sichuan Province.
Both are males and two years old. Ya'er is curious and active, while Xing'er loves climbing trees, playing with others and bathing, the park operator said.
They will take a flight to Shanghai tomorrow morning, and will say "hello" to zoo visitors before May 1 after getting used to the new environment and diet.
Shuangxin and Shuangxi, their female predecessors, left Shanghai Zoo this morning after two years.
Giant pandas reaching breeding age must return to the Chengdu center for breeding to enlarge their population, according to China's regulations.
After eating favorite apples and having health checks, Shuangxin and Shuangxi were taken into cages and left the zoo. A giant panda lover Momo who visited Shuangxin and Shuangxi every month since their arrival said goodbye to them at the zoo.
"Take care and I will visit you in Chengdu," she said to Shuangxin and Shuangxi.
The Chengdu center will look for suitable mates for them after their return.
