2 restaurants in city parks told to close in fight against extravagance
TWO high-end restaurants in Shanghai have been ordered to close for breaking a nationwide regulation banning private clubs and lavish eateries from public parks and historical buildings.
Of the more than 200 restaurants and clubs located in the city’s 161 parks, 11 failed to comply with the government’s new requirements, which are designed to stamp out extravagance among public sector officials, the local parks authority said.
The new rules state that the average price of a meal in an eatery situated inside a public park must not exceed 200 yuan (US$32.70) per person.
The two venues ordered to close are Tianxibahao, a Cantonese restaurant in Jing’an Park, and a gallery-cum-restaurant in Huangxing Park, Yangpu District.
Meanwhile, the Tianbaorenjia restaurant in Heping Park, Hongkou District, and Guilingongguan in Guilin Park, Xuhui District, have introduced set menus in a bid to lower their average prices.
The other venues identified by the authorities are located in Xujiahui Park, Shanghai Botanical Garden, Gongqing Forestry Park, Xinhongqiao Park and Daguanyuan Garden.
According to a guideline forwarded by the general offices of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council, private clubs in historical buildings and parks have “damaged the public interest, fanned corruption and triggered discontent in society,” Xinhua news agency reported earlier.
