2 ships collide near local port, three hurt

AN Italian-registered passenger liner clashed with a cargo ship early this morning at the mouth of the Yangtze River, northeast of Shanghai, local maritime authority said.

Three passengers were reported slightly injured in the accident.

The liner, Costa Classica, suffered a long slit on its side and lost control with a power glitch, according to an initial report from the maritime safety bureau.

The accident happened at 4:45am as the liner was heading to a city port from South Korea's Jizhou Island, the authority said.

The liner clashed with Lowlands Longevity, a Belgian-registered cargo ship, which was sailing in the same direction, maritime officials said.

Five maritime ships arrived at the scene after the accident. Two of them escorted the liner to the Waigaoqiao Port about 10am. While the cargo ship went to Wusong Port for checks, the officials said.
