2 students die in separate incidents
POLICE are looking into the sudden deaths of two Shanghai University students who were discovered not breathing in dorms in the past week.
The causes of the two deaths were still unknown, but police ruled out the possibility of homicide, school officials said yesterday.
"It seemed mysterious only because they happened in the same week," said Liu Shaoxue, a school official. "It was just a coincidence and the two cases are not related."
Word about the deaths was first posted on a popular local online forum, where the circumstances were described as "very mysterious." Many students were very curious and wanted more information.
Authorities did not release the students' names. Both were male: a junior of the School of Mechatronics Engineering and Automation, who died on Sunday, and a postgraduate from the Department of Material Science, who died on Thursday, Liu said.
Last year, seven college students in Shanghai suffered sudden and unexpected deaths, nearly one-third of all deaths of college students last year, according to a report released last month.
