2 students found drowned in Songjiang

THE bodies of two college students, one male and the other female, were found in a river in Songjiang University Town yesterday.

Songjiang District police have ruled out the possibility of murder, according to the report by the medical examiners, and are still investigating the case, the police said yesterday.

"The symptoms were consistent with drowning death," the police said.

The first body was found about 8am yesterday in the scenic waterway along Wenhui Road, police said. The remains were indentified as a 19-year-old freshman girl surnamed Feng, of Donghua University, who was missing since Monday night, according to Feng's supervisor.

At about noon, the body of a 20-year-old man surnamed Jiang was found floating in the river, police said. Jiang was later confirmed to be a student from a medical school in the Pudong New Area.

About 9:20pm Monday, two schoolbags with wallets and ID cards were found along the river, police said. One of them belonged to Feng.

Donghua University has set up a team to take care of the aftermath, the school said.

Students at the campus suspected the deaths were a joint suicide.

"Guardrails are on both sides of the river and are hard to climb over," noted a senior of Shanghai International Studies University.

The river is very close to the dormitory buildings and lovers walk along it every night, the student said.
