219 detained as piracy crackdowns continue

SHANGHAI police said yesterday they have detained 219 suspects for allegedly selling and making fake or pirate products in campaigns which started in November last year. The number is 2.71 times that of the same period last year.

Police said product piracy cases had been increasing and they will continue making the crackdowns.

So far more than 1.5 million fake products have been confiscated by the police with 376 million yuan (US$57.1 million) of illicit earnings recovered.

Police appealed to locals not to buy fake and forged products to protect copyrights.

After being alerted to the piracy situation, the police economic crime forces of Hongkou, Putuo, Pudong, Xuhui, Jing'an, Changning and Minhang districts worked together across the city and cracked down on the sales and production networks of pirated CD gangs during actions on December 12 and 22.

Five gangs were smashed and 13 warehouses and eight shops were raided and shut down. More than 800,000 discs, worth about 8 million yuan, were confiscated.
