23 busted for producing fake condiment, salt

TWENTY-THREE people were detained for producing fake condiment and replacing edible salt with industrial salt, police said yesterday.
More than 10 tons of industrial salt were seized.
Pudong police were tipped off about the retailer, surnamed Chen, who sold fake branded chicken powder and gourmet powder near Zheqiao Road in early April. They found most of them were sold to wholesale markets.
Police caught the suspects and seized over 1,000 boxes and 40,000 bags of fake condiment. More than 240,000 empty bags of well-known brands were also found.
Chen said the branded gourmet powder was mixed by common gourmet powder with a bit of sugar and salt. They bought the industrial salt at 0.6 yuan (10 US cents) per kilogram and sold it at 5 yuan per kilogram with the packaging of edible salt.
Industrial salt can lead to poisoning or even death.
