24 honored at Shanghai Charity Awards
TWENTY-FOUR people received the annual Shanghai Charity Awards for very large donations or long-term volunteer work, officials said yesterday.
Some of the philanthropists - mostly directors of influential corporations - not only supported education, the poor and seniors in Shanghai, but also made contributions to other areas of the country, especially those stricken by natural disasters, said the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau.
Leo Tang, an 89-year-old Hong Kong entrepreneur, was the only overseas award winner. He was honored mainly for his long-term help for education in Shanghai. He donated about 84 million yuan (US$13.3 million) to several Shanghai universities to establish new schools or help needy students. He also donated to earthquake-stricken areas in Sichuan and Qinghai provinces in recent years.
The award was established in 2009 to honor individuals, companies and nonprofits.
