24 suspects held in migration scam
TWENTY-FOUR people have been seized for allegedly organizing illegal immigration to the United States through study abroad, Shanghai police said today.
The case was the first solved with cooperation between Chinese and American police, Shanghai Public Security Bureau said.
Police said the gang posted online advertisements and forged fake resumes, transcripts and financial certificates for clients to apply to colleges through a law agency in the States.
Once the client got the enrollment document from the college, he or she would be trained to pass the visa application interview.
Every applicant was charged 160,000 yuan (US$23,430) after getting a visa.
More than 510,000 yuan was confiscated in the crackdown and police in the States were still investigating the suspect agencies following tip-offs from China, police said.
