29 held over trade in stolen diesel oil

TWENTY-NINE people have been detained for dealing in stolen diesel oil during a crackdown on the illegal oil market.

About 5,000 liters of diesel oil and 88 cylinders of liquefied petroleum gas worth over 34,000 yuan (US$4,980) were confiscated in the city's Songjiang District, the district police said yesterday.

They said the incidence of diesel oil thefts had remained high since October and they suspected an underground market was behind the crimes.

"Many oil suppliers are truck drivers," the police said.

During their investigation, they found some drivers sold diesel from their fuel tanks to earn extra money.

The police said the suspects usually approached truck drivers in parking lots. Some sold their diesel at a discount, as their companies had paid for the fuel, and the suspects then sold it on at a higher price.
