3 dead, 16 hurt in city accidents
THREE people died and 16 people were injured yesterday in three separate road accidents in Shanghai.
The first happened early yesterday morning near People's Square.
A foreigner riding a motorcycle was in collision with a taxi at the intersection of Guangxi Road N. and Guangdong Road, police said.
The motorcycle rider was pronounced dead at Changzheng Hospital. According to the hospital, the man was from Turkey. He had shown no signs of life in the ambulance and the impact had broken his motorcycle into two pieces.
A witness said he saw the motorcycle "spinning along the road at full speed."
Another witness told a local news website, xinmin.cn, that the motorcycle was carrying a woman passenger when the accident happened. The woman suffered scratches after landing on the cab's windscreen but was in a stable condition, according to the website.
The taxi crashed onto the sidewalk but no pedestrian was injured, the report said.
The second fatal accident happened at 2:30pm when a car with a family of three onboard was in collision with a sport-utility vehicle in the Pudong New Area.
The accident took place at the intersection of Zuchongzhi Road and Bibo Road, witnesses said.
The father and his daughter, aged about 10, were killed. The mother was injured and sent to a local hospital where she is undergoing treatment.
Zuchongzhi Road is a major road running through Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park.
In the third accident, a van carrying 16 people crashed into roadside barriers on expressway G60 in the afternoon.
Police said 14 of the passengers were injured, five of of them seriously.
Witness said the injured had to crawl out of the vehicle, which was severely damaged.
Normal traffic on the expressway resumed at about 3pm, police said.
The vehicle was on its way to Hangzhou in Zhejiang Province when it was believed to have suffered a tire blowout.
