3 detained as fake watch ring broken

THREE suspects were detained for counterfeiting and selling branded watches across the country, police said yesterday.

The fake Tissot, Omega and Longines watches were made to high standards and some were so close to the real ones that it was hard for non-professionals to tell them apart, police said.

Nearly 339,000 fake products, including watches CDs and branded bags, and 2.6 million sets of fake invoices were gathered and destroyed yesterday morning in public near the Bund.

City police said they will continue a crackdown on infringements.

The fake watch manufacturing and sales business was first uncovered in the city's Minhang District in February. In a recent raid, 378 counterfeit watches were confiscated in the suspects' residence.

Working with Guangdong police, officers detained a man surnamed Xie, believed to be the manufacturer, from Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, police said.

Some 100,000 watches and parts - weighing 255 kilograms - were found at Xie's residence.
