3 detained for selling trendy but counterfeit Japanese jeans

THREE suspects have been detained for taking part in a supply chain selling fake high-fashion jeans, Shanghai police said yesterday.

A local resident surnamed Wang, a fan of fashionable Evisu jeans from Japan, said he found a store on taobao.com selling the brand with a discounted price of several hundred yuan.

A genuine pair can cost 3,000 yuan (US$483).

Although Wang had his doubts, he still bought a pair. When he got them, he found the quality far from the genuine ones and the color faded easily, according to Hongkou District police.

Wang called police, who found that the store, Xinyingfenfang, claimed it sold genuine Evisu jeans. Police soon caught two suspects, one surnamed Jin and the other surnamed Lu, and found they had raked in nearly 100,000 yuan by selling the fake jeans recently.

Police then caught their wholesaler, surnamed Zhu, in the clothing market on Qipu Road, and more than 300 pairs of fake Evisu jeans were confiscated.

Zhu said the jeans cost him only dozens of yuan per pair.
