3 held in city drug trafficking case

Three men were detained last month for drug trafficking after they were caught at a highway security checkpoint in Qingpu District, police said today.

Police found 230 grams of methamphetamine and 70,000 yuan in cash in their vehicle, which was stopped by officers at the Shenjiahu Highway exit on July 31.

One officer suspected the driver was using a fake license while another recognized thought one of the passengers had a history of taking drugs.

They required the three men to get out of the car for further questioning. The driver claimed he wanted to use the toilet, and then attempted to escape by climbing over a fence before being caught by police. Two police officers suffered slight injuries while catching the man.

According to their investigation, all three had previously been booked for using drugs. Both passengers tested positive for methamphetamine on July 31.

According to police, the three confessed they were trying to transport the drugs from Zhejiang Province into Shanghai.

Police added they are still investigating the case.
