3 held over game cheat

THREE men have been detained for creating and selling software that lets players cheat at a local company's popular online game.

The trio, surnamed Qin, Wang and Li, are alleged to have sold "maphack" software for 1 million yuan (US$151,904) last year and will be charged with illegal operation, according to the Shanghai Public Security Bureau.

A maphack plug-in enables a user to see more of a map than intended by developers. This "full-map" gives them a big advantage over other players.

Qin and Wang designed the plug-in software targeting the well-known game - which was not identified - and sold it through Li. The three had confessed, police said.

Jiading District police were alerted by a tip-off. Qin and Wang were detained in Ningxia City of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and Yangzhou City of Jiangsu Province on December 28. On January 11, Li was detained in Jishou City, Hunan Province. Some 100,000 yuan of illegal income was confiscated.
