30 arrested in big telecom scam bust
SHANGHAI police said yesterday they had cracked a gang of 30 suspects in a telecom scam that cheated locals out of cash by selling them fake phone cards and junky cell phones.
Songjiang District police said the gang made cold calls to sell their fake phone cards and offered free cell phones with their cash-on-delivery service.
The scam continued for half a year and cheated hundreds of people, police said.
Police launched a raid on March 21 and busted four dens of suspects. More than 50 people were caught, and more than 30 were detained. Among those detained were a man surnamed Wang and his wife, surnamed Tan, who police considered to be the group's leaders.
