30 flights canceled due to fog
SOME 30 flights were cancelled and more than 100 delayed at Shanghai’s airports this morning due to heavy fog.
Nine flights due to land at the Pudong International Airport were diverted before 9am as the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued a yellow fog alert -- the lowest of three levels.
Among these were seven international flights from destinations including Paris, Frankfurt and Bangkok, carrying a some 1,300 passengers, which were diverted to the city’s Hongqiao International Airport.
Meanwhile, five outbound China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines flights were delayed at the Pudong airport for more than 2 hours.
When visibility fell below 400 meters at around 9am, pilots used instrument approach to the Pudong airport, the Shanghai Airport Authority said.
In this situation, pilots use instruments and navigation systems on approach to a point from which a landing may be made visually.
Hongqiao airport was less affected, with visibility remaining above 2,000 meters.
No flight was delayed for more than 2 hours there, the authority said.
Flight takeoffs and landings at both airports returned to be normal at around 9:30am, as the fog dispersed and the weather authority lifted the alert.
However, some flights were still delayed due to a knock-on effect.
