309 drunk drivers nabbed in tougher regulations
LOCAL traffic police said yesterday that 309 drivers have been caught drunk driving and stripped of all the demerit points on their licenses.
Those drivers were the first to be suspended from driving since tougher traffic regulations went into use on April 1. Shanghai Traffic Police said they would "keep up their efforts checking and cracking down on drunk driving."
A driver surnamed Zheng was nabbed for drunk driving in Changning District at 2am on April 1, becoming the first offender caught under the new regulations.
Zheng had a blood alcohol level of 0.4 milligrams per milliliter of blood, double the legal limit of 0.2 mg. He will lose 12 demerit points. Under the old regulations, he would have lost six.
Motorists with 12 points deducted in a year must undergo a seven-day training course on traffic rules before being allowed to drive again.
Drunk driving caused 47 deaths last year, compared to 42 in 2008.
