4 arrested as police attacked

A DRUNK motorist and three onlookers have been arrested for preventing officers from enforcing the law, police said.

The driver pushed over a police officer during a routine check, and the other three men then became involved in the disturbance, officers said.

The incident happened about 8pm on October 10 when the driver, surnamed Zhang, was stopped for a blood alcohol level test at a road intersection in the suburban Qingpu District.

Zhang refused to take the test, began shouting abusive language and pushed one officer to the ground.

As backup arrived, three onlookers blocked the police vehicles and started striking the bodywork of the cars. One, surnamed Yu, lay down in front of the vehicles. Traffic was affected for an hour as a crowd gathered, police said.

Zhang admitted that he had consumed a lot of liquor, while the onlookers said they just wanted to "make trouble and have some fun."
