4 charged with stealing and selling personal information of courier firm’s customers
FOUR people have been charged with hacking into a courier company’s computer system and stealing the personal information of its customers, Shanghai Morning Post reported today.
Qingpu District police caught the suspects although the report did not say when.
On May 29, a courier company reported to police that its network had been hacked and large amounts of personal information had been stolen. The information included the names, addresses and phone numbers of customers, according to the report.
The company told police the information was sold to some websites, including Xiadanla. Some online vendors purchase personal information for between 0.3 yuan and 1 yuan each to create phony purchase records to improve their rating in order to attract more customers, the report said.
Xiadanla had illegally earned more than 5 million yuan (US$812,000) from such sales. The website was shut down, according to the report.
Police are still investigating the case, the newspaper said.
