4 die in taxi-truck crash
FOUR people died yesterday in a horrific accident after a taxi collided with a truck on a suspension bridge in the city.
The accident happened about 2am on Yangpu Bridge when the taxi veered into an oncoming lane and crashed head-on with the truck.
Two people in the cab died at the scene.
Another six victims- three from the taxi and three from the truck -were taken to nearby hospitals.
Two who were in the taxi were pronounced dead 30 minutes later, while the other four were in stable condition, traffic police said.
Two of them had left the hospital by noon but the other two suffered more serious injuries were still in Xinhua and Changhai hospitals for further observation and surgery.
"I just saw a taxi suddenly flashing toward me and I stepped on the brakes ... but it was too late," said the truck driver, surnamed Ding, from his hospital bed.
Both vehicles were totaled in the accident.
Firefighters had to cut parts of the taxi open to take victims out, witnesses said, and "bloodstains were everywhere."
The truck also lost its loads of bean products.
Ding said he and two colleagues were making a delivery from a factory in the Pudong New Area to the food markets in Yangpu District.
Ding's colleagues were asleep when the taxi hit.
"I have no idea what happened ... when I woke up the van was already on the side-barrier of the bridge," one of them said.
Xu Zhangba, 19, who was sitting in the middle of the taxi's back seat, survived and is in Xinhua Hospital but was too distressed to speak, as his cousin, brother-in-law and a friend all died.
"There are three fractures in his leg and his nose was also broken," Xu's doctor, Shen Hao, told Shanghai Daily yesterday. "He will need more surgery."
