4 killed by fallen steel panels in Putuo
FOUR men working in a steel store were killed by fallen panels on Sunday morning, government said.
The incident took place at about 9am at Shanghai Zhongxin Stainless Steel Store at 1280 Daduhe Road, Putuo District, and the four were confirmed dead on the scene.
A police officer coming to the closed store on Sunday afternoon told Shanghai Daily that the victims were arranging the steel panels when the panels tilted to one side and fell on them, and that the owner of the store is being questioned.
They were allegedly killed due to "suffocation."
An employee of the store, who said that he was absent when the incident happened, said there were seven or eight people inside the store.
He said all employees there were relatives of the boss, and that no similar accident like this had happened before in the store’s six year of operation.
A man who runs a similar business nearby commented to Shanghai Daily that he was shocked by the incident because it rarely happens if the panels, usually stored on a shelf, are handled according to working rules.
He added that usually a steel panel weighs at least 50 kilograms and that a shelf-full of panels could weigh up to 4 to 5 tons.
