5 die in head-on smash

FIVE people were killed when two cars collided head-on in suburban Qingpu District, city police said yesterday.

Two people, a man and a woman, were injured in the accident shortly before midnight on Sunday and treated at the Qingpu site of Zhongshan Hospital, police said.

They were in a stable condition following surgery yesterday, said doctors.

The collision occurred on Waiqingsong highway, traffic police said.

Witnesses said one car crossed over into oncoming traffic, resulting in the head-on smash.

Three people were killed at the scene, while two men died later in the hospital, said officials.

Traffic police are investigating the cause.

The injured man, Wang Jingsong, 22, who was said to be the driver of one of the vehicles, suffered a ruptured spleen and fractures.

The injured woman, Zhang Weili, has damage to her liver and spleen, said doctors.
