5 killed, 1 injured following building collapse

FIVE people died and one was injured following the collapse of a building during demolition in Jiading District Friday afternoon, district government said today.

The building, which was recently home to a bank and is in the process of being demolished, unexpectedly collapsed at the crossroads of Cao'an Highway and Huajiang Road in Jiading District about 3:50pm.

Six people were pulled out of the rubble and five of them died despite rescues efforts.

Rescue efforts ceased at 12:30am this morning.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.
