5 shanghai universities in Times list of 100 top higher education centers
Five Shanghai universities are listed among top 100 Asian universities this year by the Times Higher Education magazine, one more from last year.
According to the annual Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings released this morning, East China University of Science and Technology, ranked at 85, joined Fudan University (24), Shanghai Jiao Tong University (39), East China Normal University (80) and Tongji University (87) in the top 100 table this year.
Chinese Mainland overtakes Japan as Asia’s number one region for world-class universities for the first time, with 21 top 100 representatives, up from 18 last year.
“It seems that China’s investment in higher education – including research and development spending, which has risen by 18 per cent a year in real terms since 2011 – is paying off,” said Phil Baty, editor of Times Higher Education Rankings.
Although Japan slips to second place with 19 representatives in the prestigious top 100 – down from 20 last year and 22 in 2013, it still boasts the region’s number one institution—the University of Tokyo. South Korea takes third spot with 13 universities.
Among China's special administrative regions, Hong Kong has six universities among the top 100 while Macau makes its debut in the tables with one school—University of Macau. Taiwan continues to decline with 11 top 100 universities in 2015, down from 13 last year and 17 in 2013.
