5 skaters attacked in clubs turf war

POLICE are hunting a gang who beat up and stabbed rollerskating trainers in what is believed to be a turf war to win the custom of young skaters.

Two of the injured were still receiving treatment yesterday, said the Shanghai No. 10 People's Hospital.

One victim, surnamed Liu, who suffered injuries to his head, back and chest, said the "356 Skating" club he belongs to has been teaching children skating outside Zhabei Park since March.

But in May another club, called "N6 Rollerskating," began touting for business there, leading to conflict.

Rollerskating is popular among local children, and many parents are willing to pay several hundred yuan a month for training camps in public parks.

The latest fight took place near Zhabei Park about 9pm on Monday. "There were about eight or nine people with tattoos and knives - we'd never seen them before," Liu said. "One guy put his knife to my neck and threatened 'to teach me a lesson.'"

The five injured were all "365 Skating" members.

Zhabei District police said they were pursuing the gang involved in the incident.
