50 parks to open longer this month

IT will become easier to take a pleasant summer evening's stroll in the city as 50 parks will extend their hours to as late as 11:30pm between today and September, and some will open around the clock, park authorities said yesterday.

Last summer, 35 parks in the city started a trial of closing later, and the practice will continue this year, with another 15 parks being added to the list, said the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau.

Jing'an Park, which normally closes at 6pm or 7pm, will extend its operating hours to 9pm, while the Binjiang Park in the Pudong New Area will close at 11:30pm.

Twenty parks including the Xujiahui Park, Huangpu Park and Hongqiao Park will open around the clock until September 30.

Longer opening hours, however, pose more security challenges to park management.

"Authorities will spend more to beef up security forces and improve lighting conditions of local parks with more parks extending their open hours," said bureau official Liu Weiguang.
