5,000 kids to enjoy free run at pools
THE city's Youth League Committee is giving away 5,000 swimming tickets to underprivileged children in the city to encourage them to use the pools during the summer vacation this year.
The tickets are sponsored by the swimming pools all over the city to support a children's project initiated by the Youth League to prevent incidents like drowning.
Drowning is listed as the prime accidental killer among children in Shanghai and China. Last year, almost half of the 56 students who died of unnatural causes in Shanghai were drowned, according to a Shanghai Youth Protection Committee report.
Xi Xiaohua with the city's Youth League Committee said many children were drowned because their parents lacked safety awareness.
Xi said children tend to think it was safe to go swimming in the wild if their parents took them there once.
In such cases, children are very likely to go swimming out again in the absence of their parents.
"Parents matter the most for a child's safety. They should warn their children about the dangers involved, especially when they are away," Xi said.
Xi said the swimming tickets will be given away free to both local and non-local children from poor families. These kids do not have the "luxury" of affording tickets to a standard swimming pool in the city.
