57 of fire dead identified, one pending DNA test
A municipal spokesman said today that 57 of the 58 people killed in the high-rise inferno on November 15 have been identified.
The one left is a male body which is believed to belong to a Japanese, said Chen Qiwei at a press conference.
Blood samples of the Japanese's relatives have been taken and delivered here by plane, said Chen.
Among the dead are 22 males and 36 females.
Some victims were so badly burned they could only be identified through DNA tests.
Chen added the city government decided not to make public the names of the dead after consulting with the victims' relatives.
More than one-third of the relatives are unwilling to release the information to the public, he said.
