6 arrested for assassination of HK woman

SHANGHAI police said this afternoon that they had detained six suspects for allegedly murdering a Hong Kong woman last month after a job dispute.

One of the suspects, surnamed Shen, allegedly hired hit men to murder the victim, Chan Chui Yu, after he had been demoted by Chan.

Shen worked as the financial executive of a Hong Kong shipping service company Shanghai branch, police said. Moreover, Chan had been dispatched to Shanghai as Shen was suspected of appropriating more than 7.5 million yuan (US$1.17 million) from the company.

Driven by his enmity towards Chan and the fear of the crime being discovered, Shen decided to kill her, police said.

Officials said Shen met another suspect surnamed Du on the Internet and hired him for the murder.

Du then plotted the kill with the other four suspects and assigned a man surnamed Cui to Shanghai.

Chan was ambushed and killed by Cui in front of her apartment in the city's Hongkou District on August 26, police said.

The case was still under investigation.
