6 crewmen saved after their barge sank in Huangpu River
SIX people fell into the Huangpu River this afternoon when their barge loaded with coal hit the pier of an unfinished bridge and sank in the river in suburban Fengxian District.
They were pulled from the water in time. No one suffered serious injury, a Shanghai maritime safety official told Shanghai Daily.
Zhou Zhengbao said the accident happened around 2pm and shipping on this section of the river resumed at 3:30pm. An investigation is under way to find the cause of the collision.
The Fengpu No. 2 Bridge, the second river span connecting Fengxian with Pudong, is still under construction. Only some piers now stand in the river.
"The coal barge bumped into the pier accidentally and it's unclear why it failed to avoid the pier," Zhou said.
Maritime authority said they would salvage the sunken barge and remove a snag in the waterway.
