80% of plastic slipcases found to contain excessive plasticizer

ABOUT 80 percent of plastic slipcases checked by the city's quality watchdog were found to contain excessive plasticizer, which poses potential health hazards, authorities warned today ahead of the new semester.

The Shanghai Quality Inspection and Supervision Bureau checked 30 batches of plastic slipcase samples produced or sold in the city, and found 25 had excessive phthalate esters.

The bureau did not reveal the list of companies involved, but said it has ordered them to rectify.

It advised producers of slipcases to use traditional kraft paper instead of plastics as materials.

Excessive level of phthalate esters can affect hormone system and lead to sexual precocity of children, doctors warned.
