81 scratched from budget home list

OUT of the 2,566 family applicants for Shanghai's first batch of budget homes, the city housing authorities have disqualified 81, officials said yesterday.

Some of the applicants were rejected for giving inaccurate information about their homes, some for under-reporting their economic status and some because they already had an apartment elsewhere in the city.

The applications were collected from Xuhui and Minhang, the city's first two districts where the budget home project was carried out.

Applications will be available citywide later this year.

The remaining applicants face further checks by the district housing authorities.

The Shanghai Housing Security and Housing Management Bureau will soon publish the results.

Shanghai is planning to build 6 million square meters of budget apartments. Prices are to be between 4,800 yuan (US$703) and 5,200 yuan per square meter, about 30 percent cheaper than the nearby housing projects, according to earlier reports.
