8-hour knife ordeal ends in surrender

CITY police late last night freed a woman who was held hostage by a man wielding a knife in a hotel room after an eight-hour standoff.

About 11:45pm the woman, suffering from shock, was taken away by ambulance when the man freed her and later surrendered after the drama in Qingpu District.

The man, surnamed Yan and wearing a black mask, was handcuffed and walked out of the hotel with police about 12:40am today.

Police said the man lost his cool after arguing heatedly with the woman, surnamed Zhang.

Yan is a native of southwestern China's Sichuan Province.

Officers were tipped off about 3:18pm that a man was holding a woman at knifepoint in a second-floor room of Jia Jia Hotel. Police cordoned off the road and asked guests to lock their doors.

"We were getting nowhere with the negotiations," said a police spokesman surnamed Shi.

Nearly three hours into the drama, Yan's sister went to the hotel to try and help.

Negotiators did not give up and finally persuaded Yan to let the woman go. "The marathon was finally over," said a police officer.
