A bit shy but all doing well--meerkats from Africa start meeting visitors
Seven meerkats introduced from Africa met visitors at the Shanghai Zoo today for the first time after leaving quarantine with the hope that these small nimble animals can breed in Shanghai.
The meerkats, including four males, were shy when they first arrived at the zoo early this month, zoo operator said.
They hid behind stones and looked around on alert, they said.
Meerkats live in deserts in southern Africa, and animal keepers in the zoo paved sand on the ground to create a place similar to their living environment.
They also placed stones and created caves for the little creature to rest. Geothermal heating facilities were installed.
After half a month, these meerkats have been used to their new home, the zoo said.
Their favorites are eggs and yellow mealworms and they like burrowing, it said.
Meerkats are the prototype of Timon, a character in The Lion King.
