A lot for movie buffs to expect as blockbuster movies will pack upcoming 'New Year's season'

SINCE early December, a lot of Chinese and foreign movies of diverse genres will be squeezed into the slot of the "New Year and Christmas season" with the box office competition getting heated.

On Friday, Tim Burton's new dark fantasy film "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" will be released in China with both 3D and IMAX 3D version to create stunning visual effects.

The film revolves around a boy who follows clues to a mystery that leads him to a large abandoned orphanage on a remote island. After he gets to know the residents and their special powers, the danger deepens. The film is expected to attract a large young audience for its magic and spectacular scenes.

"Sword Master," 3D martial arts romance directed by Derek Yee and produced by Tsui Hark will also start screening on Friday. Based on a well-known short novel of Gu Long, the film depicts a charming Chinese risk-taking swordsman with superb martial arts.

On December 8, biographical war film "Hacksaw Ridge" directed by Mel Gibson will hit cinemas across China. The movie is a legendary story about World War II American Army Medic Desmond T. Doss, who refuses to carry any weapons during the war. After saving more than 70 soldiers, he also becomes the first man in American history to win the Medal of Honor without firing a shot.

Movie buffs will also be presented biographical drama film "Sully" since December 9. Starring Tom Hanks, the latest offering of Oscar-winning director Clint Eastwood is a story of Chesley Sullenberger, an American pilot hero who managed to save all the flight's passengers and crew after landing his damaged plane on the Hudson River. 

Highly-expected movies to be shown in December also includes French action-packed crime film "Antigang" which stars Jean Reno as a brave cop, Zhang Yimou's epic historical film "The Great Wall," Chinese suspense romance movie "The Ferryman" and spy drama film "The Wasted Times."
