AQI soars above 200 this afternoon

Smoggy weather blanketed the city today with a level of PM2.5 particles about seven times higher than the World Health Organization’s safe standard, posing a risk to those with heart and respiratory conditions.

The air quality index started rising from a “slightly polluted” level at 7am to 228 or “heavily polluted” at 1pm, according to the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center.

The density of PM2.5 particles reached 178.3 micrograms per cubic meter at 1pm, higher than the safety guideline of 25 micrograms set by the WHO.

Children, the elderly and people with heart and respiratory conditions are advised to stay indoors, the center said.
