Abandoned newborn found in toilet
POLICE caught a woman who allegedly abandoned her newborn girl in a public toilet in Hongkou District yesterday morning.
The 44-year-old mother, surnamed Mao, was put under police surveillance in her home out of health considerations since she had just given birth, police said.
The mother told officials she abandoned the baby because she is a drug addict and can not afford to raise a child. She refused to identify the father.
Her daughter is healthy and being cared for at Hongkou Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital.
She was found abandoned in an excrement bin in a public toilet on Changzhi Road E. around 7:15am by a man surnamed Ding. He said he lives just 5 meters from the public toilet and heard the baby crying.
"She was naked when found," Ding told police.
Some neighbors said they emptied their chamber pots in the bin that morning and a sanitation worker had rinsed it out around 7am.
"The baby was very pale and the worker might have mistaken her for an abandoned doll," said another resident surnamed Zhang.
Ding called police immediately and the baby was picked up at 7:20am.
"She kept crying and her body was icy cold," said a police officer who was at the scene.
The baby was sent to Xinhua Hospital, where doctors cut the umbilical cord and found no deformities or disease. She was later transferred to Hongkou Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital for further treatment.
